Members of the club take part in open water swimming at Salford Water Sports Centre, Salford Quays. We are a mixed ability, age and gender group.
Open water season generally runs from April to October, depending on temperature. At the beginning and end of the season, wetsuits are advisable but not mandatory; this depends on how hard-core you are, although it is mandatory, during the colder seasons, that you have a swim tow float. After October, chill swims are available on alternate Sundays. For more details please see Salford Water Sports‘ website. In between these colder times, we enjoy ‘Costa del Salford’ without wetsuits, as water temperatures can rise to 22 degrees.
There are two courses available: 300m and 500m lapped courses. You can swim at your own pace and complete as many laps as you wish.
All bookings and payments for swims are to be booked through Salford Water Sports‘ website.
We enjoy training in the open water season and always look forward to participating in the Great North Swim, which takes place in the summer month of June, at the picturesque Lake Windermere. This has become a group event which has grown in popularity with members over the years. We do tend to make a weekend of it, camping close to Windermere and socialising with a BBQ to celebrate our personal successes.
If you are interested in joining the Swinton open water team, please speak to Hayley or Nadia for more information.
**Please note: Salford Water Sports Centre has an individual swimming age restriction of 12 years old. A letter from the swimmer’s coach is required if the swimmer is under 12. The swimmer will have demonstrate an ability to swim 300m competently and confidently in cold water, accompanied by an adult swimmer.
